Introduction
The global refugee crisis is a multifaceted issue that encompasses not only the humanitarian and social aspects, but also significant economic challenges faced by both refugees and the countries hosting them. The scale and magnitude of the refugee problem vary depending on the region, country, and specific context. While European and North American countries are the major recipients of refugees, other countries such as Turkey, Iraq and Lebanon are also greatly impacted by the influx of displaced people.
According to the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) [1] that global force displacement has reached over 100 million. They are displaced from their homes due to conflict, persecution, and violence, resulting in severe economic impacts on both the refugees and their families. At the same time, hosting countries often face economic strains in providing for the basic needs of refugees and managing the social and economic consequences of large-scale forced displacement.
This project proposal aims to comprehensively examine the magnitude of the current refugee issues, including the economic challenges faced by refugees and the hosting countries, as well as the social, political, and humanitarian impacts. Backed by rigorous research, data analysis, and advocacy efforts, this project seeks to raise awareness, promote policy changes, and support sustainable solutions that address the complex interplay of economic, social, and humanitarian challenges faced by refugees and their hosting communities.
However, the case of forcibly displaced people (refugees and asylum seekers) should not be looked at as a liability. In addition to moral and humanitarian responsibility, they can greatly contribute to the local economy.
The major output of the project is two-fold, namely:
- Fostering enablement programmes that allow refugees supporting themselves through working at businesses proposed to be established by this project
- Minimize the socio-economic burden for the refugee hosting countries caused by the influx of refugees into or passing through their countries
